Campus Capers

Someone, whom I have never met, had previously decided, on the opinion of others that I also do not know, that my research does not fit into the agenda of the University. This point was stressed again today in their refusal to support my application for a Rutherford Fellowship, my last hope for funding from my own government. As is now standard internationally, no such grant is obtainable without institutional support. No doubt everyone is hoping that when they (literally) kick me out the door, I will finally (after 25 years) give up on the idea of ever being a real scientist, and just disappear. So what should I do next? Oh, look. We have free legal services in this country ...

  1. Hang in there, it's often tough for us women.

  2. Hang in there? I'm not sure you realise how those words sound after almost $44$ years of being put in my place.

  3. Someone suggested I try my alma mater, where I do actually have a vague acquaintance with a few people. They have quite a few postdocs. Oh, but they are all men (no, those two women on the list are visiting PhD students who happen to be married to postdocs).

  4. So I emailed the few remaining Kiwi non earthquake damaged universities. The first guy referred me to someone else, who said that I should apply for a full time tutoring job. Wow, original. The next guy told me that their university had just greatly expanded, but that many young Europeans were very keen, at present, to move elsewhere. Old women just shouldn't dream of a job in science, should they?
