Quote of the Month

From Lubos Motl on Tommaso's blog:
Even today, we wouldn't have the right theory if we were only using experiments and the old conceptual ways of thinking.

  1. Thank you for this very beautiful quotation, which summarizes precisely the supremely confident attitude of today's mainstream string theorists.

  2. From Lubos? What about his SIGNIFICANCE without experiments???

  3. Experiments are old physics. The modern approach is to look for beautiful mathematical ideas which can't experimentally be tested and found wanting. If string theory was closely tied to concrete predictions, string theorists would all risk failure if experiments disproved them.

By deliberately making speculations so vague that can't be disproved easily, they guarantee that the investiment of time and effort needed to learn string theory won't be a waste. True genius.

  4. To anonymous: You said it. Sounds like religion. True genius.
